Default to HD player?

Is there any way to make the player default to HD?  There is the question of wether viewers will actually even understand that it is indeed a button and not a road sign telling them the video is in HD when it isn't. Defaulting to HD or stating "HD ON" would make more sense.

Keeping standard def as our default is on purpose because many people do not have connections or hardware that are conducive to HD playback. Safe bet is standard def for now (to save all of us headaches).

 As I thought about it, it does make sense.  If they have a high speed connection they can try the HD button. And of course not everyone has blazing fast internet, much to all our woes.   A video hosting site I used when I first started had technology that could detect a viewers internet speed and display accordingly.  They didn't have a host of other features that I wanted but that was a nice feature.
