A mansion, a headquarters,a hospital, and a headquarters again. Originally, Chatham was a grand mansion overlooking Fredericskburg and the Rapahannock River. It became a headquarters for General Ambrose Burnside's Union forces in 1862. After severe losses Burnsides turned the mansion into a hospital. Today, Chatham is the headquarters of the National Park Service's Fredericksburg division.
