Topsfield was inhabited by a tribe of Native Americans called the Agawam. The English had settled within the bounds of modern-day Topsfield by 1643, when the settlement was known to them as New Meadows.[1] Tradition has long held that the Agawam referred to this place as "the pleasant place by the flowing waters" - a description of the countryside as accurate as it is poetic.
