In 1974, a Portland, Oregon, physician and surgeon, Bill McAllister, discovered and fell in love with a very special ranch. It was located at the point where the forested eastern foothills of Mount Hood join the highlands of Central Oregon, an easy and beautiful ninety-minute drive from Portland. Wildlife and water were abundant, and much of the land was highly productive for agriculture. Rainfall was less than in San Francisco, some twelve inches annually, and the sun shined on the ranch an average of over 300 days per year. Mount Hood was close enough to reach out and touch.
